Message from the President
For This We Were Called
When I was a boy growing up in the church, I would hear talk about someone having a special calling from God. It seems like it usually referred to someone who received a call to be a pastor, or, if someone was really called, it was to be a missionary in a foreign land.
I got the impression that a lot of people felt that if they didn’t sense God’s call to ministry or to a lifetime of missionary service, they were somehow off the hook. But the older I got and the more I studied the Scriptures, I came to realize that God’s call to serve isn’t just for a select few. He has something in store for all of us.
Called to Salvation.
As born-again believers, there is one call that all of us hear from God and respond to with faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. One way or another, we all heard the Gospel and were saved. Maybe you were reading the Bible, or talking to a friend about the existence of God, heard Billy Graham on the radio, or said a halfhearted prayer that God answered with a bolt of lightning that drove you to your knees, asking Christ for forgiveness. God’s saving grace changed our lives and now we belong to Him, “Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling” (2 Timothy 1:9, NASB).
Called to Give God Glory.
Our calling also has to do with the purpose for our creation. In Ephesians 2:10 (NASB) the apostle Paul says: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Paul added a little more to that thought in 1 Corinthians 10:31 when he said, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” It doesn’t matter if we are serving God in Kansas or Kenya, no matter what we do in our lives we are expected to act in a way that brings glory to God.
Called to Fulfill the Great Commission.
The call for all believers to participate in the spread of the Gospel is pretty clear in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” I guess we could argue that someone who is called to be a preacher or a missionary may have a job with a little higher profile, but we are the support troops, and our efforts are just as vital to the ultimate fulfillment of the Great Commission.
As believers, we share the great anticipation that the Lord’s return could be just around the corner. The best way to hasten His return is to rejoice in the calling of our salvation, try to live every minute of our lives for His glory, and use every opportunity we have to help fulfill the Great Commission by sharing the Gospel. That’s the calling we all have in common.
